Dishwashers: Troubleshooting and Repairing
Josephine Cochrane made history when she created what went on to become the prototype of the modern dishwasher. As most invention stories go, this one comes with a quirky story of its own. Josephine unveiled her invention at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, but before then she had never—NEVER—washed dishes herself. Josephine was rich, the granddaughter of steamboat inventor John Fitch, and the only reason she came up with an idea of a dishwasher was because her maids kept chipping her china. In this case, one woman’s carelessness led to another woman’s glory.
Here are some basic tips on how to repair a dish washer:
- The first rule of thumb as far as broken dishwashers go is to check the plug and the circuit breaker. Sometimes it pays to observe these tiny details. Some people go all the way to replace their dishwasher, only to find out their circuit breaker is already half-burnt to a crisp.
- Next it’s time to check the timer, door switch and the selector switch. If the dishwasher doesn’t turn on, check these items and replace them if necessary. If it still doesn’t turn on, the problem is internal. Something is busted up inside the dishwasher. It’s time to call a technician.
- There are times when the dishwasher works but the dishes aren’t getting cleaned. When this happens, check the water supply. Maybe there’s not enough water coming into the machine; maybe there’s no water at all! Make sure there’s water coming in and out of your dishwasher.
- So okay, there’s water in the machine but is it hot enough? Cold or even cool water won’t clean the dishes. Dishwashers operate on hot water. So make sure there’s enough of that.
1970
For a time dishwashers thrived only in commercial establishments such as restaurants and hotels. But all that changed during the 1970s. Put another way, dishwashers found a new niche at around that time: the American home. Home dishwashers were popular around the world, sure, but American consumers devoured the machines as if they were apple pies.
